The supplements that have helped me most on my healing journey

Updated: Sep 9, 2023

During my battle with Lyme disease + co infections especially, I have tried many, MANY supplements! These are the supplements that I still take most days after 9 years of living with the illness.

Magnesium

I am forever low in magnesium, my body simply chews it up! Whether it’s muscle fatigue and cramps, slow gut, or assistance with sleep - magnesium can be helpful for so many people.

I now get my high-dose magnesium specially compounded for me by the local pharmacy but another favourite is BioCeauticals Pharma Mag Forte:

Zinc

It took me YEARS to find a zinc supplement that wouldn’t make me nauseous... Given zinc is so important for assisting the immune system, finding a zinc supplement that worked for me was a godsend!

I get mine from FX Med.

Side note: Doctors often don’t test zinc and copper levels. Zinc and copper directly relate to one another and it’s important to know your levels of both. I am also copper deficient so I have to be wary of my zinc intake.

Biotin

A few years back I had a week long EEG to measure my seizure activity. If you haven’t had one before, they use industrial strength glue to attach the electrodes to your scalp - and no, there’s not an easy way to dissolve the glue! Thus, I had chunks of my hair pulled out and my self esteem really suffered as a result. My hair is now back to as luscious as ever after using a combination of biotin and scalp massages.

Laxatone by Metagenics

This combination of herb goodness is great for IBS-C sufferers.

Melatonin

Melatonin is becoming increasingly common to take among the general population yet us chronically ill folks can usually benefit even more so. It’s especially useful when using alongside a sleep hygiene schedule.

Glutathione

Now, I don’t think glutathione helps me quite as much as some other Lyme sufferers, however, I do like to take it during a flare up or after contracting another virus. It has also shown to be very helpful for those with COVID-19.

Digestives

I had quite severe GERD for many years and was on a PPI for a while. Unfortunately these types of antacids can cause problems in the long term. Since I have started taking digestives with every meal I very rarely have to take antacids. I wish I had discovered them sooner!

Vitamin D

Definitely get your vitamin D levels checked. Being low in Vitamin D can contribute to a range of symptoms.

Phyto Pro

Great for detoxification support, it includes herbs like Milk Thistle and Turmeric.

COQ10

A powerful antioxidant with many potential benefits for the brain, heart and lungs.

Vitamin C

I have done high-dose IV-C monthly protocols for years and it was one of the only things that made a marked difference in my immune function and energy levels. Unfortunately, I had to stop the high dose treatment as the acidity worsened my IC symptoms... but I'm still a big fan of Vita-C!

Vitamin B3

Growing up on the coast in Australia with fair skin pretty much guarantees the risk of skin cancer... but did you know that taking Vitamin B3 can actually help reduce risk of non-melanoma skin cancers? I started taking the supplement around a year ago and it’s very inexpensive.

Prebiotics & Probiotics

After years of antibiotic protocols, my gut has needed A LOT of attention. I get colonics every 4-8 weeks and it’s important to replace that good gut bacteria!

Endura

Like many others with chronic illness, I experience hypoglycaemia and this is by far my favourite electrolyte powder. I take it everyday to help with POTS symptoms as well.
